Murter je otok u sjevernom dijelu Dalmacije koji s kopnom ne dijeli trajekt, nego pokretni most u Tisnom — dovoljno da osjetiš kako si stvarno na otoku, a dovoljno blizu da ga ne moraš planirati mjesecima unaprijed. Za mnoge je to samo usputna stanica prema Nacionalnom parku Kornati, čije je Murter tradicionalno polazište; mnoge murterske obitelji i danas imaju zemlju i masline na kornatskim otocima, pa se more ovdje ne doživljava kao granica, nego kao produžetak vlastitog dvorišta.

Murter is an island in northern Dalmatia connected to the mainland not by ferry but by a swing bridge in Tisno — enough to make you feel like you're truly on an island, yet close enough that you don't need to plan the trip months ahead. For many it's just a stop on the way to Kornati National Park, of which Murter is the traditional gateway; many Murter families still own land and olive groves on the Kornati islands today, so the sea here isn't felt as a border, more like an extension of the backyard.

Ruta koju smo mi izabrali bila je preko Obrovca, Benkovca i Stankovaca — mogli smo, naravno, uskočiti na autocestu i biti tamo ranije, uz manje razmišljanja. No Velebit i stara cesta uvijek su veći doživljaj od autoceste, ma gdje čovjek krenuo. Ako ne žurite — a to je jedini savjet koji dajem s punim uvjerenjem — vidjet ćete i doživjeti puno više, uz pokoje ugodno mjesto za stati i predahnuti.

The route we chose ran via Obrovac, Benkovac and Stankovci — we could, of course, have taken the motorway and arrived sooner, with far less to look at. But Velebit and the old road are always the bigger experience compared to a motorway, wherever you're headed. If you're not in a hurry — and that's the one piece of advice I'll give without hesitation — you'll see and experience a great deal more, with a few pleasant places to stop along the way.

Krenuli smo, ja i prijatelj, oko devet ujutro, cestom koja se spušta niz Velebit s pogledom na Muškovce i sela ispod. Preko Obrovca, pa kroz Karin Gornji i Karin Donji, do Benkovca i Stankovaca. Malo prije Benkovca stali smo na pumpi Batur — ima restoran i kafić u sklopu — popili kavu i nastavili dalje, sve do rotora i križanja s jadranskom magistralom iza Dubrave kod Tisnog, odakle cesta vodi prema Pirovcu, Vodicama, Tisnom i Murteru. Znak za Vodice upao nam je u oko — znamo da nam je to sljedeća postaja u nekoj od budućih priča.

My friend and I set off around nine in the morning, down the road that descends Velebit with a view over Muškovci and the villages below. Through Obrovac, then Karin Gornji and Karin Donji, on to Benkovac and Stankovci. Just before Benkovac we stopped at the Batur petrol station — it has a restaurant and café attached — had a coffee and carried on, all the way to the roundabout where the road meets the Adriatic highway past Dubrava near Tisno, from where it leads towards Pirovac, Vodice, Tisno and Murter. The sign for Vodice caught our eye — we already know that's our next stop in some future story.

Nastavili smo prema Tisnom — jako lijepom malom mjestu koje od Murtera dijeli tek uski most. Gradić koji definitivno vrijedi posjetiti u sklopu izleta na Murter — ako ništa drugo, barem prošetati rivom i popiti kavu s pogledom na kanal koji ga dijeli od otoka.

We continued towards Tisno — a really lovely little town separated from Murter by only a narrow bridge. A town that's absolutely worth a visit as part of a trip to Murter — if nothing else, at least a walk along the waterfront and a coffee overlooking the channel that separates it from the island.

Prije samog Murtera dočekalo nas je stajalište s vidikovcem — pogled na more, otoke i samo mjesto koje se prostire ispod, a koji jednostavno vrijedi zaustaviti i zabilježiti, ma koliko žurili. Ulaskom u grad našli smo parking bez većih problema, po relativno solidnoj cijeni — oko euro po satu, sasvim prihvatljivo za par sati odmora. Auto smo ostavili i krenuli dalje pješice, polako, onim tempom kojim se otoci i trebaju razgledavati.

Just before Murter, a lookout point awaited us — a view over the sea, the islands and the town itself spread out below, well worth stopping for no matter how much of a hurry you're in. Once in town we found parking without much trouble, at a fairly reasonable price — around one euro an hour, quite acceptable for a few hours of rest. We left the car and carried on on foot, slowly, at the pace an island really ought to be explored.

Prvo što nas je dočekalo bile su brodice, poredane uz rivu, s pogledom na more koji odmah opravda dolazak — i sam ulaz u grad, s trgom lijepo popločanim starim kamenom. Murter je, poput svakog malog dalmatinskog mjesta, prepun suvenira koji te vežu uz otok, restorana, kafića i barem jedne lokalne pivnice. Uske uličice vijugaju između kamenih kuća, a otok je, iako mali, zapravo sastavljen od četiri mjesta — Murter, Betina, Jezera i Tisno — svako sa svojim karakterom. Betina je poznata po tradiciji drvene brodogradnje, po gajetama koje se i danas grade ručno, i ima čak muzej posvećen toj vještini. Nedaleko od samog grada nalazi se i Colentum, antički lokalitet — podsjetnik da ljudi ovdje žive uz more mnogo, mnogo dulje nego što bi se dalo naslutiti dok šećete trgom s kavom u ruci. Usput smo, kao i uvijek, uhvatili poneke lokalne ljubimce — mačke koje traže hlad i ne mare puno za turiste s fotoaparatima.

The first thing we came upon were the boats, lined up along the waterfront, with a view of the sea that alone justifies the trip — and the entrance to the town itself, its square nicely paved in old stone. Like every small Dalmatian town, Murter is full of souvenirs tying you to the island, restaurants, cafés and at least one local brewery. Narrow streets wind between stone houses, and the island, small as it is, is actually made up of four settlements — Murter, Betina, Jezera and Tisno — each with its own character. Betina is known for its tradition of wooden shipbuilding, for the gajeta boats still built by hand today, and even has a museum dedicated to that craft. Not far from the town itself lies Colentum, an ancient Roman site — a reminder that people have lived by this sea far, far longer than you'd guess strolling the square with a coffee in hand. Along the way, as always, we ran into a few local pets — cats hunting for shade, largely unbothered by tourists with cameras.

Put prema plažama zapravo je iznenađujuće blizu — od jedne do druge ima tek desetak minuta hoda, što znači da se u jednom danu lako obiđe više njih, bez žurbe i bez presjedanja u auto.

The walk to the beaches turns out to be surprisingly short — it's only about ten minutes on foot from one to the next, which means you can easily visit several in a single day, without rushing and without getting back in the car.

Prva na redu bila je Plaža Luke — mješavina pločnika, staze i šetnice, s dovoljno klupa i hlada za one koji žele samo sjediti i gledati more, pa sve do šljunka i pijeska za one koji su došli zbog kupanja. Nije plaža koja će vas oboriti s nogu na prvi pogled, ali je uređena, pristupačna i ugodna — dobar uvod u ono što slijedi.

First up was Luke Beach — a mix of paved promenade, path and walkway, with plenty of benches and shade for anyone who just wants to sit and watch the sea, right through to pebble and sand for those who came to swim. It's not a beach that will knock you off your feet at first sight, but it's well kept, easy to reach and pleasant — a good introduction to what follows.

Prava zvijezda — po mome skromnom mišljenju, kad je riječ o plažama na Murteru — jest Plaža Slanica. Ne kažem to olako, jer je svaka uvala na ovom otoku po svome lijepa, od Podvrške do same okolice Colentuma. No Slanica ima nešto više. Pogled na uvalu i okolno kamenje je predivan, hlada ima dovoljno za cijeli dan, a uz plažu se nižu mjesta gdje se može probati i lokalna gastronomija — o čemu će biti riječi u posebnom članku. Zamislite da sjednete jesti u restoran s pogledom na more, plažu i taj beskrajni plavi prostor pred sobom. A sama plaža? Sitni pijesak koji se doslovno topi pod nogama, mekan kao da ste nekim čudom sletjeli na Maldive umjesto u sjevernu Dalmaciju. Nije slučajno što je neki zovu hrvatskim Maldivima.

The real star — in my humble opinion, when it comes to Murter's beaches — is Slanica. I don't say that lightly, because every cove on this island is beautiful in its own way, from Podvrške to the area around Colentum. But Slanica has something more. The view over the bay and the surrounding rock is stunning, there's enough shade for a whole day, and the beach is lined with places to try the local food — more on that in a separate article. Imagine sitting down to eat at a restaurant with a view of the sea, the beach and that endless blue stretching out in front of you. And the beach itself? Fine sand that genuinely melts under your feet, soft enough that you'd think you'd somehow landed in the Maldives instead of northern Dalmatia. It's no accident some people call it Croatia's Maldives.

Nakon obilaska ove dvije plaže, i par mjesta gdje smo sjeli predahnuti, krenuli smo kući s punim baterijama — i s onim posebnim osjećajem koji ostane kad upoznaš mjesto koje ti jednostavno sjedne. Murter nije otok koji vrišti da ga primijetiš. On samo tiho radi svoj posao — a mi ćemo mu se, sasvim sigurno, rado vratiti.

After the two beaches, and a few stops to catch our breath, we headed home with our batteries full — and with that particular feeling that stays with you after meeting a place that simply fits. Murter isn't an island that shouts for your attention. It just quietly does its job — and we'll certainly be glad to come back.
